Weekly Wrap Up - Do the Robot Bash
01 Nov 2016
Trick or Treat. Cross the street. We’re the weirdos you’d like to meet. That famous Halloween rhyme was brought to you by yesterday’s holiday festivities here and the zero neighbors who visited us.
Spheroites and their families enjoyed an ice cream bar with enough gummy worms to make you squeamish from the sugar, a face-painting station creating Iron Man/Ninja Turtle hybrids, and a ghastly costume contest.
This year Spheroites fashioned their Halloween best with homemade costumes, cultural-reference costumes, group costumes and political costumes. No bad hombres or nasty women could argue with Nathan from Accounting’s Cheese Grater costume, promising to “Make America Grate Again”; nor Colin from Hardware’s Where the Wild Things Are group costume. Many won awards and not a 5 Harley Quinns were spotted—a scarily successful party, indeed.
This morning, however, the celebration aftermath has nearly quadrupled our kitchens’ usual candy supply. Apparently most of us don’t trust ourselves to not indulge in leftover candy and made the kitchens our dumping ground.
While this sight may be scary at first, we must remember this is Boulder and we’ll probably just run a marathon or hike a fourteener this weekend to burn that off.
So go on—throw caution to the wind and that pack of Skittles in your mouth, I say.
Your candy-hoarding spirit—and the dentist, probably—will scream in delight.
A Day In The Life: Nick Woolger
Q. Hello, friend. Mind telling the fancy people your name and title here?
A. Hiya! My name is Nick Woolger and I am a Electrical Engineer.
Q. And what do you do at Sphero everyday?
A. I design the electronic circuits that make our products awesome by allowing them to do interesting things like you know—move, play audio and use lightsabers. Well, maybe no actual lightsabers yet...
Q. DON’T PLAY WITH ME, NICK. How does one get into doing what you do? Or making said lightsabers happen?
A. Well there is much studying in your future, my young padawan. You’re going to want a degree in engineering and the desire to tinker with things and try new ideas, take things apart and (usually) get them back together.
Q. Also applicable for one’s social life. Can you share what you’re working on or is it super secret?
A. Super secret squirrel, I'm afraid, but trust me—it’s going to be AWESOME!
Q. You do have a trusting face. What do you enjoy most about working here?
A. All the brilliant people that I work with! Plus Nerf guns and Star Wars.
Q. Do you have a favourite Sphero bot?
A. I like Darkside Ollie because of the speed. The only thing better than that is driving it with a Force Band!
Q. SO epic. What epic things do you get into outside of Sphero?
A. Skiing, hiking, playing video games and trying out new restaurants in the bubble.
Q. What do you enjoy the most about living in Colorado?
A. You have this cool thing that is so different from anything back in the UK…big, bright in the sky...I think you call it the sun? Seriously though, the weather here is amazing.
Q. Right? Snow or shine, it’s all amazing. What local spots can you suggest to check out?
A. I am a big fan of Zolo Grill and Fate Brewing.
Q. Lastly, what can you tell us about yourself that most don’t know?
A. Before I saw the light and moved from rainy old England to Colorado, USA, I lived in Australia for 6 years.
