Weekly Wrap Up - Blazin'

We’re having a heat wave. To be clear, we’re not just talking about the 90+ degrees the mercury climbed to each afternoon, but the fiery ruckus that set our hearts ablaze at Comicon this weekend. You guys came by in your cosplay best, played battle bots with our BB-8 demo tables, captioned numerous selfies with our life-sized BB-8 on Snapchat, and you may have even snagged yourselves one of our exclusive posters. Best of all, you guys witnessed that really cool thing that happened. Remember that, guys? Ha, that was so great.

For those of you who missed out due to heat or a phobia of furries, fear not—we’re back at the Colorado Convention Center for ISTE this weekend with the whole bot gang.

Whether you’re an educator attending the conference or a tourist Instagramming yourself underneath the Big Blue Bear outside, our bots have something for you. And for those of you looking for something more, we’d like to introduce you to SPRK+, the newest addition (Could that be a pun? Survey says yes.) to our bot family. You can check this awesome bot out and some sweet deals in the SPRK collection here.

So like the temperature outside, we hope you keep the fire inside ablaze this week.

Unless it's heartburn. You should probably sort that out.

A Day In The Life: Rabia Aslam

Weekly Wrap Up - Blazin'

Q. Hi, there. First, let’s get some formalities out of the way: who are you and what is your title?

A. My name is Rabia Aslam, and I'm a Firmware Engineer at Sphero.

Q. And what exactly do you do at Sphero every day?

A. I write firmware for Sphero's hardware products. This is software that lives on embedded systems like our robots.

Q. That sounds pretty rad. Any advice you can impart for someone interested in the same kind of work?

A. For someone interested in becoming a Firmware Engineer or a similar role I would suggest learning as much as you can about developing embedded systems - be it through formal education or self learning. The most important thing is having a really great portfolio to showcase your work. So keep those personal projects going!

Q. Keeping my donut-making, cake-baking, cat-memeing bot dreams alive. Can you share what you’re currently working on or is it super secret?

A. In my role, on a daily basis I'm helping support products that have already been released and future products. In a lot of situations this requires collaborating with all the teams that work on the different software stacks required for Sphero products.

Q. Team building at its finest. What is your favourite aspect of working at Sphero?

A. My favorite part of working at Sphero is the people I work with - they are all super smart, passionate about their work, and overall really enjoyable to work with.

Q. Which of our bots is your fave?

A. My favorite bot is SPRK! I love the fact that you can see all the internals because the shell is clear. I also really like the concept of the Lightning Labs app which allows kids to dabble with coding and see their programs come to life with SPRK.

Q. I’m counting on the youths for realising my robot wishes. What do you like to do outside of Sphero? What gets you going?

A. Outside of work I enjoy watching a range of TV shows and movies. I also try to keep active by heading to the gym and checking out some local trails.

Q. Boulder has some choice trails. What else do you love about living in Colorado?

A. My favorite part of living in Colorado is the natural beauty and the culture of taking advantage of all that the outdoors offers here.

Q. You can’t live here and hate the outdoors. Anywhere I gotta check out?

A. My first adventure in Colorado was checking out Echo Lake which shows a beautiful reflection of the mountains. This is on route to the drive up Mount Evans where the terrain is supposed to be very similar to the arctic tundra. It was really cool to experience.

Q. That whole mountain is pretty epic. Definitely recommend not feeding the goats. Ok, one last question—tell me something about yourself that will blow my mind. Or at least that I will find unexpected, thus semi blowing my mind.

A. I have never skied or snowboarded, but am looking forward to learning and testing my skills out on the Colorado slopes.
