Top 10 Real Life Robots

The effort to narrow the list of the best real life robots down to ten was almost as hard as it was to identify The Top 10 Fictional Robots of All Time from our previous post. Heated office discussions and even some rough language went into the creation of this list. It was hard work, but we were up for it. Feel free to leave a comment and let us know your favorite robots. In no particular order, here is our list of the Top 10 Greatest Real Life Robots of All Time!

Robot Violinist

STAIR - The Stanford AI Robot

You have this old geezer to thank for the breakthrough into early robotic functionality. One of the first bots to 'grasp,' he can also unload a dishwasher and prepare simple household meals. We wonder if it can learn a secret handshake?

Breakdancing Robot

You might have some strong dance moves, but can you bend it like this bot? Seriously, this tiny robot has more moves than Breaking 2: Electric Boogaloo.

VGo Robot

Ever wish you could teleport to the office from your bed? Almost as good, picture your face on this creepy yet innovative telepresence robot that you send to work for you. VGo Robot gives you the opportunity to cruise around your office from the comfort of your down comforter. All you have to do is use a Wi-Fi or broadband network and your PC or laptop. The VGo is enabled with a camera and microphone that transmits your voice image onto the robot’s ‘face’ while you interact with others as if you were there. No more calling in sick now that your robot doppleganger is on the payroll.

This robot surgeon provides doctors the ability to execute precise laser surgery and leaves the docs from Grey’s Anatomy dusting off their post med school resumes. We, for one, welcome our new robot surgeons.

BIGDOG's movements are so lifelike that it's sort of...well, creepy and awesome at the same time.  Check out the video - don't you kind of feel bad for it when it starts to slip on the ice?

We all know Rubik's Cubes can cause hours of frustration and angst. Well those puzzles have finally met their match. His color sensing features allow him to solve the cube in as little as 30 seconds; not quit as fast as the fastest human on record.

ASIMO - Humanoid Robot

Awww, Honda's ASIMO is so cute.  Don't you just want to adopt him?  The cool thing about ASIMO is that he is able to recognize objects and sound and react to them - pretty amazing.


OK, ok, we know! How can we not be a little biased around here though? A mixed-reality robotic ball allows you to use your smartphone in a whole new way. Sphero goes on adventures, lets you play night golf and beer pong, and he even has his own chariot.
